This week’s community spotlight shines right to the heart of the Downtown area of Tazewell, where a recently renovated storefront will house a coffee shop that will serve the community in more ways than just offering incredible gourmet beverages. This future business, the Well Coffee Shop, is set to open this June and will serve as a destination stop for gourmet coffee and beverages. We decided to contact the couple who are starting the business and learn more about their personal history, the way this idea was formulated, and the greater mission behind this establishment.

I introduce to you the owners of the Well Coffee Shop, Mike and Venus Laney. Mike is a Tazewell County native and lifelong resident with the exception of his four year service in the United States Air Force. The couple briefly resided in Minot, North Dakota and returned to Tazewell County in 1999. Although Venus resided in many states along the east coast growing up, she has always considered Tazewell to be her home. Both graduated from Tazewell High School and each have generations of family roots in the area. The couple have two children, Jake and Ella. All are active members of their home church, Tazewell Family Worship Center. Jake is also a recent graduate of THS and a member of Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ. The family enjoys outdoor activities with Lincolnshire Park being one of their favorite destinations to visit in the county.

Why did you decide to start your business and what were the early challenges of its development?

“This is a faith inspired vision. It started with the name ‘The Well’ and a desire to see a place for our community to come together. The vision is one of connection and is reminiscent of the very qualities that define Tazewell; warm, friendly, and inviting. The biggest challenge has been time. Our family and the community alike are all so excited for this shop to open. However, doing much of the work ourselves, time is limited for us. In addition to typical family demands, we are both working full time jobs elsewhere and helping with our church.”

How do you think your business will meet the current needs of Tazewell, and why did you two decide to open the shop on Main Street?

There are currently no other establishments within 20 miles that offer gourmet espresso drinks. In addition, it will be an inviting location for friends and neighbors to meet and reconnect.”

“There simply was no other discussion for us in determining the location for our new business. It had to be Main Street in Tazewell. It is a blessing and a dream to be able to offer our community this type of establishment to enjoy in our hometown.”

Where will the beans used for your gourmet coffee be sourced from and roasted?

“Our gourmet coffee is roasted in Abingdon, Virginia. The house blend is a custom specialty roast that includes Kenya origin beans. Venus assisted with a gospel crusade in the small village of Embu, Kenya in 2010. There are a few special items within the shop that bring tribute to the country and remind us of God’s faithfulness as we say ‘YES!’ and serve in this next mission.”

How do you feel about opening such a unique local business in the Town of Tazewell?

“Everything about the Well is new to us and new to Tazewell. We are excited to grow and develop to meet the needs of our community.”

How do you view the future of Main Street in Tazewell?

“We see the future of Main Street to be bright!  This is an exciting time for our town and specifically Main Street. The community is ready and waiting to support all the new small businesses opening in our area. There is hope and an inspired feeling of support that is so encouraging. We are proud to be a part of that. Look for doors to open at the Well in June!”

We are not from Tazewell, but have family there and saw your post on their page, I don’t know how you plan to decorate the business, but we were in a similar establishment a while back, and they had decorated the walls with paintings by local artists[they were for sale.] This is a way to help others, assure word of mouth advertising, and improve the appearance of your business, and it’s free too! Good luck!
